Free Legal Services hosted at the library

The Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program, the Solo and Small Firm Section, the Dispute Resolution Section working in cooperation with the Dallas County Bar Association and Legal Services Alabama hosted a free legal services clinic at the Selma and Dallas County Public Library Tuesday morning.
Linda Lund, director of the Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program, said the clinic was in observance of pro bono month.
“We make an extra effort to reach out to the public during the month of October to spread the word about the services we offer and the great work attorneys do all through the year,” she said.
Lund said because of the success of the event, they plan to continue having it at the library.
“We plan to do the clinic quarterly from now on,” she said. “We are now on the calendar at the library for every second Tuesday of the first month of the quarter.”
Volunteer attorneys were present to provide free legal advice to people that cannot afford to pay for legal fees.
“We’ve had a lot of great volunteers here providing legal assistance to the public,” she said. “We had one client gain a power of attorney today. She got full-service today.”
The lawyers answered legal questions about various topics while providing advice on further action. Lund said this hands-on experience is what is needed in the community.
“Not only are we here providing the actual service, it lets the public know that these types of services do exist,” she said. “Even if they don’t need it today, they know there are organizations providing this type of assistance and they can reach out and call us any time of the year.”
