Recently, I celebrated my one-year anniversary as the superintendent of Selma City Schools.  It has been an amazing year!  Although there are plenty of challenges, this year has proven that time really does fly when you’re having fun.

Upon assuming this role, I presented our board of education with a transition plan that detailed goals and objectives.  This was the roadmap for my first year.  On November 15, I will host the State of our Schools Community Summit to serve as a check-point for this first year.

During this year-in-review, I look forward to highlighting the many positive events and achievements that have taken place since last October.  I will also share our areas of need.

As I reflect on my time leading Team Selma, I believe that forming a transition team and completing our strategic plan, A Framework for Excellence, was perhaps the most pivotal accomplishment.  This plan includes updated vision and mission statements, new core values and beliefs.  It sets a clear direction for Team Selma for the next five years.  This is critical for us to address the many challenges faced by our school district.

Our community is aware of the strategic plan; but did you know that Selma City Schools created two TheraGyms, one at Selma High and another at R.B. Hudson?  TheraGyms offer an inclusive sensory play space for students with disabilities.

Did you know that we have formed a grant writing team with a goal of raising 1 million dollars?  We are enthusiastic, and our team is getting creative to ensure that we have adequate funds to improve outcomes for our children.  Potential grants range from re-purposing a bus into a greenhouse to promoting literacy throughout our community. 

Did you know that five of our schools began the year with new, phenomenal leaders?  Supporting these leaders has been a true joy and I am confident that our scholars are in great hands.  Leaders matter.

Speaking of leaders, for the first time our administrators are participating in a state-approved professional learning unit designed to improve their literacy leadership.  We meet monthly for interactive sessions that give us a laser-like focus for leading strategic teaching in our schools.

There are many other highlights that I could share but I will save it for the summit.  I encourage you to come out and support our schools and learn more about what we have done and get a sneak peek at what’s ahead.  The event will be held Nov. 15 at Selma High at 5 p.m.  It’s an exciting time to be a member of Team Selma and I could not be more thrilled and humbled to serve as the leader.
