Selma police are searching for a gunman who opened fire early Saturday morning on a group of men standing on a porch in the 1400 block of Church Street, leaving three wounded.

Tre Moore, 18, of Selma is in critical, but stable condition at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center after suffering a gunshot wound to the stomach, said Selma chief of police William Riley.

Riley said officers received a call about the shooting around 5:40 to 6 a.m. Saturday. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Moore partially underneath a house.

“When they rolled him over they found a handgun underneath the victim,” Riley said. “He didn’t say who shot him.”

Rodney Walter, 19, and Jonathan Marshall, 29 also were injured in the shooting.

Riley said Walter came to the Selma Police Department with his parents about 3:30 p.m. to report the incident.

Riley said Walter told authorities a man dressed in black opened fire on Walter and his friends, who were gathered on the porch of a house in the 1400 block of Church Street. Walter said he ran after the shooting began and was hit by a bullet in the upper arm.

Marshall also reported to authorities later he had seen a black man with a gun open fire on those gathered on the porch. Marshall said he turned and ran, but was hit twice, once in the shoulder and once in the upper portion of the middle of his back, Riley said.

“All of these guys were together,” the chief said.

Investigators believe robbery was the motive but Riley said that could change as the investigation continues.
