Andy Stewart and Rebecca Stewart are on opposite ends of the Alabama vs. Auburn rivalry.
The husband and wife’s favorite memories of the annual Iron Bowl contest are different.
Rebecca Stewart, a Dietician at the Dallas County Health Department, said her favorite Iron Bowl is Alabama’s 17-0 victory at Legion Field on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1992. The Crimson Tide eventually captured the SEC and National Championships under coach Gene Stallings.
“That Iron Bowl is special to me because that was the first year we began dating,” Rebecca Stewart said. “I don’t remember anything else about the game, other than Alabama won.”
Andy Stewart, President of Trustmark Bank, said the 1982 Iron Bowl is his favorite. The Tigers snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series, winning 23-22. The contest, known as “Bo Over the Top,” was the final Iron Bowl for Alabama coach Bear Bryant, who retired after the season and died on Jan. 26, 1983.
“We finally ended the streak with Bo over the top,” Andy Stewart said. “We never beat Alabama during that time. Beating them was a big deal and I’m a big Bo Jackson fan.”
Andy Stewart said the 2010 and 2013 contests, both Auburn victories, also stand out. The 2010 contest was a 28-27 Tigers victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium and the Tigers’ national title season. The 2013 contest, a 34-28 Auburn win is known as the “Kick 6” which the Tigers won on a missed field goal return.
“My second favorite is the Cam Newton game in 2010 and third was the Kick Six,” Andy Stewart said.
Alabama is a 24-point favorite in this year’s Iron Bowl, which will be played Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Tuscaloosa’s Bryant-Denny Stadium.
