Jamar Desean Pritchett, 19, died early Sunday morning in a crash following a pursuit by local law enforcement.
According to Selma Police Chief Spencer Collier, Selma investigators received information shortly before midnight Saturday that a black male was in the parking lot of Michael’s Pub on U.S. Highway 80 brandishing a small rifle.
The subject, later identified as Pritchett, was observed by an officer with the Selma Police Department’s (SPD) Special Operations Unit leaving the area. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle along AL-219 but Pritchett failed to stop and attempted to elude.
Additional SPD officers, as well as officers in the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, were enlisted to join the pursuit, which continued at high speeds through Selma and into Valley Grande.
As the chase wound its way onto County Road 37, Collier said the officers began to reduce speed when they noticed the subject begin to drive “extremely recklessly.”
It was at this point that Pritchett’s vehicle left the road and struck several trees after going airborne. According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Public Information Officer Reginal King, the collision occurred at 12:56 a.m. within the city limits of Valley Grande.
Pritchett was announced dead at the scene.
Authorities later found out that, in addition to the weapons charges for which he was being pursued, Pritchett also had an outstanding felony warrant for burglary.
According to King, no additional information is available at this time and Alabama State Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident.
