Danni Lee Simmers serves as a first responder at two different occupations.
For the last 14 years, she’s worked as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at Care Ambulance. Since 2002, Simmers has been a volunteer firefighter at the Valley Grande Fire Department.
Simmers has a unique view of both jobs.
“As an EMT, you have to take care of the patient until you reach the hospital, as a fire fighter, you have to take care of the patient until the ambulance comes,” Simmers said.
Simmers said she enjoys her role in both jobs.
“I like it that I’m able to help someone,” Simmers said. “I can’t pick one job over the other. I grew up helping people. I used to work at the Salvation Army.”
Simmers is able to bring both of her jobs home. Her husband, Jeff Simmers, is also an EMT at Care Ambulance and a volunteer firefighter at Valley Grande Fire Department. They’ve been married for 12 years.
“We don’t work together anymore, but we understand things,” Simmers said. “We see a lot of gruesome stuff. We talk about it, then we let it go. We make it. It’s a hard field on a marriage, there’s a lot of late nights.”
Simmers is a lifelong native of Dallas County. She grew up in Burnsville, located near the Autauga County line. She graduated from Dallas County High School in 1983.
