Selma University baseball coach Adrian Holloway will be hosting the inaugural Holloway Baseball Skills camp at Bloch Park on Dec. 29.
The camp, which will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., is open to children between the ages of 7 and 19. The registration fee is $20. Children must bring their own gear including cleats and gloves. Catchers must bring their own gear and kids should bring their own bats.
Holloway said he’s pleased with the current registration, which stands at 27 kids. He expects the number to increase.
“We expect more kids to register on the day of the event,” Holloway said. “We expect 40 kids to participate.”
Holloway, who is also Selma U’s Athletic Director, said the timing is right to have a baseball camp.
“Most Universities’ private instructors have baseball camps in the winter,” Holloway said. “Major League Baseball just wrapped up its winter meetings. Kids are seeing private trainers and getting private lessons. Baseball’s become a year-long thing.”
Holloway, 35, played baseball at Alabama State University and spent time in the minor leagues.
Ashley King, Holloway camp coordinator, said Holloway never forgot his roots in the Queen city.
“Adrian has been a pillar of the community for many years,” King said. “Even though he has enjoyed a successful baseball career, his first passion remains giving back to his hometown.”
King said he and Holloway are both looking forward to the camp.
“We are happy to bring together this camp for children in the community,” King said. “The purpose of the camp is to help children who play baseball develop various baseball skills. Not only will we strive to better their athletic abilities, but we will also aim to enrich them overall through teaching life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship. We look forward to serving the community and hope to bring the camp back for years to come.”
