Former Dallas County High School graduate Kendarius Smitherman graduated from basic military training in the U.S. Air Force National Guard on Wednesday.
Smitherman, an Airman 1st Class, finished basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, in San Antonio, Texas.
The 2018 Dallas County graduate completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Smitherman landed a one-year $2,500 scholarship from the Dallas Wilcox Bama Club, a chapter of The University of Alabama National Alumni Association in the spring.
Smitherman is the son of Hazel Peace and Latoya Smitherman and grandson of Bille Smitherman of Selma.
