On Tuesday, the Alabama Senate unanimously reelected Sen. Del Marsh, R-Anniston, to serve as the body’s President Pro Tempore. The vote was 32-0, with both Democrats and Republicans approving Marsh for another term.
This is Marsh’s third consecutive term in the Senate’s top spot and he is the only person to serve in that role since the Republican takeover of the Senate in 2010.
Despite heavy turnover in leadership positions at the state level, Marsh praised the Alabama Senate in a press release for being a bastion of collaboration, working together to “pass legislation that benefitted all Alabamians,” a prospect made easier by the fact that Democrats have little power in either chamber of the state legislature.
“The Senate has worked smoothly over the past several years and I believe today’s bipartisan vote reflects that,” Marsh said in the press release. “I am proud of the work we have done to improve the lives of the people we represent and will continue to operate the Senate in that way. It is an honor to serve the people and the state in this capacity and not something I take lightly.”
Marsh noted in the press release that he looks forward to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to take on “tough issues facing Alabama,” like “passing balanced budgets.”
Marsh also reaffirmed his commitment to passing “conservative pro-growth policies,” which he says have led to an “unprecedented record setting economy.”
The legislature’s Organizational Session began Tuesday where chamber members will elect leadership positions, approve operating rules and confirm committee assignments.
