Mike Granthum was officially sworn in as Dallas County Sheriff on Friday at the Dallas County Courthouse.
Granthum was sworn in by outgoing Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard. It was Ballard’s final day in office and he said Dallas County residents will be fine with the transition from Harris Huffman Jr. to Granthum.
“You’ve got a good man for sheriff replacing another good man as sheriff,” Ballard said.
Standing alongside Granthum during the swear-in was his wife, Kathryn Granthum and their two children, Walter Granthum and Peyton Ellen Granthum.
Granthum, who officially takes office Tuesday, said he’s looking forward to leading the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
“It’s a big day and it’s been a long time coming,” Granthum said. “I’ve been in law enforcement for 25 years. I’m excited to be taking over. I had a lot of help to get here.”
Granthum, who spent the last 16 years as captain in the sheriff’s office, thanked the county residents for electing him on June 5, 2018. He beat Michael D. Goings 5,933 to 4,749 votes in the Primary Election.
“Without the people, I wouldn’t be standing up here,” Granthum said. “I appreciate the community support. I won’t forget where I come from. My doors will always be open to the public.
“I love the people of Dallas County. Their safety and well-being weighs heavily on my heart and goes into a lot of my decision making.”
Granthum praised the leadership and dedication of Huffman, who spent six terms and 24 years as sheriff.
“I’m replacing a great sheriff,” Granthum said. “Huffman is one of the longest-serving sheriffs in the state.”
Among the high-profile local officials in attendance were Huffman, Dallas County Probate Judge-elect Jimmy Nunn, Circuit Court Judge Collins Pettaway, former Dallas County Probate Judge Johnny Jones, City councilwoman Jannie Thomas and Dallas County Emergency Management Agency Director Toya Stiles.
