Historic homes, local art, wandering troubadours and book signings are just a piece of what will be in store for people who take part in the 43rd Annual Historic Selma Pilgrimage scheduled for March 16 and 17.
The event, sponsored by the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society and the City of Selma, began in 1976 as a way of presenting Selma’s place in history through local landmarks featuring a variety of architectural styles.
According to a press release, Selma boasts the largest historic district in Alabama, with more than 1,200 historic structures. Almost as important as the buildings themselves are the features that surround the buildings, like Spanish moss, wrought-iron fences and heirloom blooms.
Visitors will be able to take part in guided tours through nine historic Selma homes and an exploration of the 1860’s grist mill and grounds, as well as a variety of other locations which tell the story of Alabama’s Black Belt.
The pilgrimage will begin at the Vaughan-Smitherman Museum, which also serves as the event’s ticket booth, and learn about the museum’s history as a school, a courthouse and a Confederate hospital.
Actors will be on hand to portray prominent Selma citizens and share their stories at Heritage Village and Miss Minnie Sue’s Cottage and Sturdivant Hall will be open to share its collection of period antiques.
Private homes will be open as well, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day and at Kenan’s Mill attendees will grind meal and have it for sale.
The Selma Art Guild will host shows both days and Paper Works Local will present an exhibition at Carneal ArtsRevive. There will also be a traveling waterways exhibit from the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street.
Though parts of the pilgrimage are free, most homes and museums charge admissions. A complete ticket package for both days can be purchased for $50.
