The 2019 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEM/STEAM) Conference was held on Jan. 26 at Wallace Community College-Selma.

The event was sponsored by the Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and its Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy.

According to the STEAM registration, 250 girls attended the daylong event. They were from the sorority’s service areas of Dallas, Lowndes and Perry counties.

The girls in grades 5-8 and ages 11 through 14 were introduced to STEAM, with the purpose of improving their education, social, civic and cultural skills. The conference consisted of speakers and breakout workshops.

Athelstein Johnson and Sadie Moss, two members of the Delta chapter, are the co-chairpersons for Delta Academy. Dr. Sherica Hather is in the sorority and also contributes to the Academy.

Johnson said she was pleased with the turnout.

“It went well,” Johnson said. “Girls attended five workshops in the STEAM subjects presented by professionals in each area with fun, informative, hands-on activities. Girls were excited, energized and presenters felt objectives were fulfilled.”
