Northridge had no answer for Selma High point guard Rodericka Parker.
The junior scored 18 points and made 10 assists as Selma spanked Northridge 62-35 in the Class 6A Girls’ Sub-Regional on Monday night.
Selma (22-8) advanced to the 6A Southwest Regional semifinals against the Blount-Robertsdale winner on Friday at Alabama State University in Montgomery.
Selma coach Anthony Harris plans to retire after the season, which Parker said motivates the Lady Saints to win a state title. After the game, Harris was presented with a plaque from the Selma High Athletic Department for his 30 years in service.
“I want to win a state championship for coach Harris,” Parker said. “I’ve been practicing on my shot all weekend.”
Harris said Parker has a unique skill set, which makes the Lady Saints’ offense go. Parker was MVP of the Dallas County Schools Basketball tournament.
“If I had another point guard, I’d move Rodericka to the two-guard,” Harris said. “She knows when to take the shot.”
Parker wasn’t the only Lady Saints in double-figures. Ta’Sharri Grimes added 14 points and seven assists. Aeraonnia Manuel came off the bench with 12 points. Aaliyah Hatcher finished with 10 points.
Selma jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game’s first two minutes as Parker scored five points. Northridge (11-16) climbed within four points twice, but once Parker’s shots started falling, the Lady Jaguars were done.
The Lady Saints led by as many as 15 points and 32-20 at halftime. Parker had 16 points.
“Getting off to a fast start has been our game for years,” Harris said. “We like to get out and run. The girls played hard. Before the game, I told the players, ‘it’s one and done, there’s no tomorrow.”
Alana Green was the only Northridge player in double-figures, scoring 10 points.
