Mentors help Selma students realize their potential

Today, we shared two stories about mentorship in Selma and Dallas County.
The participants of the Graduation Mentoring program and those of the 100 Black Men of America group that participated in the discussion with middle school students have planted a seed in the students they have interacted with.
Mentorship is very important especially in a community that those that live outside of this community has given a death sentence to.
Mentorship helps someone realize their potential.
These groups have celebrated the talents that these students possess. Nurturing these talents will keep these students focused on what is important in their life, and will also lead them to ways to hone their talents and give them a better life doing what they excel at.
Mentorship gives back to the community.
Mentorship is one of the most impactful ways to improve a community. Spending time investing in the future that will eventually take over is powerful, and mentoring the future is a powerful way to invest in the next generation.
Mentoring also forms long-lasting relationships.
Meaningful relationships are a two-way street. Along with helping others learn more about their strengths, you can also learn more about yourselves as well.
Relationships like these also have the power to alter a person’s life – particularly youth – for the better. For some, mentors are the only stable and positive impact in a student’s life.
The investment these mentors make also allows them to become a better leader. Mentoring gives these people an opportunity to learn more by doing.
Emerging 100 Chairman Robert Stewart described mentoring as sobering, yet inspiring.
We hope these mentors inspire others to become a mentor to the youth as well.
