Lions and tigers and… kangaroos?

No, it’s not a weird, new telling of  L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” instead it’s just some of the animals that can be seen at the Flea Market for the next three weeks.

The show hopes to educate people on the animals and should provide a boost to the local economy through out of town visitors.

Brian Staples’ animal safari has been traveling across the county for more than three generations to help aid in the rehabilitation of exotic and domestic animals.

“My grandfather worked for the Washington Zoo and my father, Donnie Staples, did this too,” Staples said. “I’ve been around zoo animals all of my life.”

Now Staples’ zoo travels from city to city, giving children the chance to get up close and personal with animals that they may never have the chance to see.

“My whole objective is to get children interested in animals,” Staples said. “Our animals serve as ambassadors. When children leave after being here, they become ambassadors too.”

The animals of Staples Safari are no strangers to being big time acts.

Several of Staples’s animals have worked with major actors such as Jennifer Anniston, Eddie Murphy and Miley Cyrus.

Visitors can do several things from riding on ponies and camels.

They can also see Staples put on several shows for the visitors that include magic and individual shows for his animals.

“He is preaching conservation and helping animals,” Farris Harper, a local volunteer said.

“That is what he is all about. It’s a great message.”

Staples shows will run daily at the Flea Market from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
