The Fredrick D. Reese Foundation’s second annual March 4 Muscles is scheduled for this Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at Bloch Park.
The foundation and participants will gather at the park Saturday morning to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The money collected by the foundation will go toward research to find a cure for the disease, as well as fund scholarships for the Fredrick D. Reese Foundation.
The Fredrick D. Reese Foundation is named after Dr. F.D. Reese, an influential Civil Rights leader and a member of the Courageous Eight who played a large part in the voting rights movement of 1965.
The grandson of Dr. F.D. Reese, Alan Reese, co-founded the organization with his brother, Marvin Reese, Jr.
Alan say that March 4 Muscles is a cause that’s very personal to their family.
According to Alan, Dr. Reese lost two sons to the disease.
In addition to the march, there will also be a raffle for a 55-inch flat-screen HDTV.
Members of the Courageous Eight, the eight-member committee that spurred the early stages of the Voting Rights movement, will also be there.
“It’s important to educate people about the legacy of my grandfather [Dr. F.D. Reese] and those that marched with him,” said Alan.
Alan asked that anyone who can’t find the time to get to the event on Saturday to make a donation online at www.fdreesefoundation.org.
“We ask people to donate just $1 a month,” said Alan. “That’s only $12 a year, but it goes a long way,” said Reese.
Registration for March 4 Muscles is $20. Registrations can be made through www.eventbrite.com, just enter “March 4 Muscles” in the search bar.
