Cars lined both sides of the road leading up to Angie’s Auction Saturday morning, as pickers from across the South descended on the local treasure shop to take part in the Historic Hwy 80 Yard Sale, often billed as the “World’s Widest Yard Sale.”

The lot at Angie’s Auction was packed with vendors, both directly in front of the building and dotting the open field across the street, from as far away as Atlanta, Birmingham and more.

“A lot of them save up just for this,” said Bo Morgan, organizer for the local event. “They just can’t until April gets here.”

Morgan said many of the vendors are hobby collectors and only get out to peddle their wares when the historic highway sale comes to Selma.

Vendors were selling a variety of antiques, homemade jams and jellies, appliances, clothing and a variety of other oddities and treasures.

A string band was set up directly in front of the building, lending an authentic sound to the rustic scene.

Despite the stormy weather that careened in and out of the sky on Friday, Morgan guesses that around 400 people showed up for the first day of the annual picking event.

By noon on Saturday, more than 1,000 people had paid a visit to the yard sale.

“They started coming before the sun came up,” Morgan said with a smile as he diverted his attention back to unloading a carpet for a woman on the hunt for a new living room piece.
