Wallace Community College-Selma (WCCS) held a ribbon cutting celebrating the opening of a food pantry on campus.

“It is another great day for Wallace Community College –Selma as we continue to be one of the best community colleges in the world,” said WCCS President Dr. James Mitchell. “Oftentimes we just look at students as people who come here who pay tuition, go to class and then graduate. At this college, we decided we needed to do more. We need to address the total student need meaning we understand there are needs outside of the classroom We will continue to meet the needs of our students not just in the classroom but their personal needs as much as we can. This was a vision that I had because as a kid growing up I was hungry at times and I understand what that means. This food pantry is for the students to use for free and I hope they don’t abuse it but use it. I put my wife, Priscilla in charge of making this happen along with her committee.”

“It is such a great opportunity for us,” said Priscilla Mitchell. “We want our students to focus and we know they have a lot of challenges in life and we don’t want hunger to be one of them as they are here on this campus. This pantry is based on donations. You can make monetary donations and you can make the checks payable to the Wallace Community Foundation. The pantry is open from 9-11 a.m. Monday through Thursdays.”

Students that attended the event were glad of the opening.

“This is a great addition to the campus,” said Tayla Bonner. “To know that Wallace has our back as they assist those who need food is great.”

“There are people who struggle when they come to school,” said Tyala Bonner. “Being able to have a place like this that they can use is beneficial.”

“I think this shows that Wallace has our best interests,” said Kevin Jones. “They are not only thinking about us academically but also thinking about us as family.”
