Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss

The first book club my grandmother hooked me up with was The Young Reader’s Club. It featured Dr. Seuss books.
Then, they came: Green Eggs and Ham; One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; Will You Put Me in the Zoo; The Cat in the Hat; Go, Dogs, Go … for a couple of years, there, the illustrations were wacky and the words pretty much rhymed.
Then, came the son. We read them over and over. We talked about the drawings and I listened as he read his first book: “Do you like my hat? No, I do not.”
Then, came the grandson. We read them together, laughing about the drawings. When I skip a word, he makes me go back over.
For three generations in our household, we’ve loved and quoted Dr. Seuss.
Today is his birthday. Students in Selma City Schools have read Seuss today, an assurance his work will carry on. With his giving so much pleasure and assisting so many kids with reading and comprehension, I’m surprised Dr. Seuss never won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
No, seriously.
How many lives have those books of his touched? What was your first Dr. Seuss experience?
