Dallas County High School earned a berth in the Class 4A Softball Regional Tournament.
The Lady Hornets (2-21) will face American Christian Academy (ACA) in the opening round on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Choccolocco Park in Oxford. The Lady Hornets qualified by finishing as the Area 6, 4A runner-up.
Dallas County’s young squad includes pitcher Brooklyn Pouncey, JaKiera Peterson, Anna Grace Small, LaTia Horton, Nikki Beckjorden, and twins Kristalyn Briggins and Sherilyn Briggins. Peterson and Beckjorden are the only seniors on the squad.
“I’m really excited for the girls,” Lady Hornets coach Stevie Creel said. “It’s a special thing to be going to Regionals, with a chance of making it to the state tournament. This will be my first time going to Regionals as head coach, it’s exciting.”
ACA (28-8) won the Area 7, Class 4A championship. The Lady Patriots are led by Katherine Grill, Hannah Miles and Melissa Fray.
A Dallas County win puts the Lady Hornets against the Leeds-Elmore County winner at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. With a loss, the Lady Hornets will face the Leeds-Elmore County loser at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing to a contest at 7:30 p.m.
“Being so young, I knew we would take some lumps this year, but the experience they are getting is going to pay off in the future,” Creel said.
The top two teams in the region advance to the state tournament, starting May 15 at Lagoon Park.
