The Morgan Academy football program will host weekly workshops for fathers, mothers and families on the importance of sports next week.
The one-hour workshops will start on July 8 and July 9 at 6 p.m. in the Morgan Academy Gymnasium. The event is free and open to residents of Dallas County. Sessions will be broken up into classrooms.
“We’ll cover topics such as social media influence, how sports prepares your child for life and what it means to have a servant’s heart,” Morgan Academy football coach and Athletic Director Josh Thacker said. “It’s not enough anymore to just be a good athlete. They need to hear the same messages at home in regards to dedication to your team, mental fortitude to do the right things all the time and discipline to make good decisions.”
The first week will be a Father/Son/Daughter camp to discuss the importance of hard work, discipline and servitude.
The second week will be a mother, son, daughter camp to discuss the same issues with an emphasis on the female perspective.
The third week focuses on the entire family, combining all the messages into a week of family bonding in hopes of growing the love for sports in the household.
Thacker said the athletes and parents were the reason for Morgan Academy’s successful year in sports. The school won state titles in golf and tennis, and came within an inning of capturing the baseball crown. The football team and basketball teams were also successful, reaching the AISA State playoffs.
“We’ve had success lately because of the buy in by the parents and athletes,” Thacker said. “We hope to show the importance of sports in young children’s lives, the important lessons that can be learned and the important role that parents play in a successful athletic program.”
