The family of Alex George, Jr. threw their patriarch a 100th birthday celebration on Saturday afternoon at the Beloit Community Center.

Friends and family of George, who became a centenarian on Wednesday, July 24, attended the celebration to recognize the accomplishments of the man’s long and storied life.

Mamie George Gant, who spearheaded the organization of the celebration with her sister, Shirley Bennett, brought together George’s many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren to celebrate him.

Loretta Thomas, one of George’s 22 children, said that she never thought she’d see the celebration of her father’s 100th birthday.

“I never thought I’d see one of my parents turn 100,” she said. “It’s truly a blessing.”

George, a World War II veteran, joined the United States Army in 1944 and maintained a rank of Private First Class throughout the duration of his time in the service.

After his stint in the army, he held many different jobs over his career in order to support his family.

George worked as a share cropper in Marion Junction, Miller Lumber Company, Swift Oil Mills, Vanderbilt Road Construction, Dallas County Commission of Labor and finally at The American Candy Factory from which he retired after a back injury.

Lorenza George, a son of George’s, expressed admiration for his father’s many years of hard work.

“I’ve always looked up to him,” he said.

George’s family described him as a very quiet spoken and gentle man who loves the Lord and his family.

He attributes his longevity to his faith and obedience to God.
