Heath LeVert won his first-ever game as the Dallas County head coach.

The Hornets raced out to a 22-8 halftime lead and cruised to a 30-14 victory at Martin Field in Plantersville.

“It’s my first career win and I’m excited as I can be,” LeVert said. “It’s a weird feeling. As the clock started ticking down to one minute left to play, I said, ‘Holy Cow, we’re going to pull this thing out. It’s a special feeling, one that I will never forget.”

Dallas County’s offense continues to gel as quarterback Calvin Griffin scored two touchdowns.  Aaron Fails and Keith Thomas also scored for the Hornets (1-2, 1-1).

“We had a big night running the football between the tackles,” LeVert said.

But what LeVert is especially proud of the Hornets’ defensive effort.

“We tackled much better this week,” LeVert said. “We tackled better than we did the first two weeks tonight.”

LeVert is also pleased that the young Hornets have progressed since fall practice began last month. LeVert said he’s noticed the improvement.

“We took the approach of getting better everyday,” LeVert said. “We have to outwork out opponents during the week and it will show up in the games.”

Dallas County travels to Sipsey Valley next Friday night in another Region contest.
