The Selma Police Department (SPD) has charged a mother and her son for allegedly beating a man to death last Friday.
Interim Selma Police Chief Robert W. Green announced at a press conference Wednesday that Shana Muldrow, 56, and her son, Shakeem Butler, 24, are charged with the murder of Joseph Minnifield, 58 on Sept. 20. The incident began at the 1500 block of Hayden Street around 10:20 p.m. Friday. SPD officers later responded to a call at Vaughan Regional Medical Center.
Green said SPD investigators developed leads and got a search warrant at the 1500 block of Hayden Street on Sept. 24. Green said Butler showed up at the premises while officers executed the search warrant. After Butler was arrested and taken to the police station, Muldow arrived to the station and was arrested.
During the investigation, SPD detectives learned that Muldrow was Minnifield’s girlfriend, according to Green. Green also said the victim was shot over losing Butler’s dog.
“We are hoping that the arrests of the two suspects will bring some closure to the case for the victim’s families,” Green said.
Muldrow and Butler are both being held in Dallas County Jail with no bond. Green said they will eventually get a bond hearing.
“Minnifield was a great guy according to those who knew him,” Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said.
Green praised Sgt. Ray Blanks, Detective Devan McGuire, Detective Robert Tyus and Detective Matthew Till for their work on the case.
