Morgan Academy, Selma High get key Region wins

Running back Holt Utsey ran for 152 yards and scored two touchdowns as Morgan Academy defeated Springwood 24-14 on Friday night in Lanett.

The Senators (3-4, 1-2) kept their AISA State playoff hopes alive.

Utsey surpassed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the Senators.  The junior had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown.

Morgan Academy head coach Josh Thacker said he’s pleased with the Senators’ effort.

“A good, hard fought win for the guys,” Thacker said. “They responded well in the second half. Proud of the way our defense and special teams played tonight.”

Selma High 46, Calera 27: The Saints improved to 4-2, 3-1 in Region 3, Class 6A with a crucial road win.

Quarterback Keondre Hope threw three touchdowns passes, one each to Amarion Mollette, Javante  Stubbs and Dion Nelson. Nick Parnell also scored.

“I’m extremely pleased, but we still have a lot of work to do,” Saints coach Will Gandy said. “We’re going to take it one game at a time.”

Maplesville 48, Ellwood Christian 0: The Eagles remain winless, falling to 0-6, 0-3 in Region 3, Class 1A.

According to ECA coach Ray Blanks, the Eagles only had 12 players. He praised ECA’s effort.

“To hold the No. 1 team in our region to 48 points with only 12 players, I feel good.” Blanks said.
