The Selma High Saints couldn’t overcome a 5-run fifth inning from Sidney Lanier and ended up falling 13-10 at Bloch Park on Friday.
“We are still on a learning curve,” Saints coach Reggie Glover said. “We are still making some errors. Those small mistakes are magnified at the end of a close game like this.”
Glover said his team had a good night at the plate, but more improvements can be made as the season continues.
“We are still feeling a little impatient at the plate right now,” Glover said. “I want to see us work on doing better at the plate when we are in good hitting situations. There were times tonight we would have the bases loaded with just one out and swing at the first pitch and pop it up.”
“We just need to get better at understanding that situational hitting.”
Cornelius Woods lead the Saints in hitting going 2 for 3, Jashombe Smith was 2 for 4 from the plate.
The Saints now prepare for their next game against Billingsly Monday at Bloch Park.
If they want to have success, they are going to have to stay focused according to Glover.
“We just have to keep our head up,” Glover said. “I’ve told them to always be ready. Even when we were coming back in this game it was ninth and 10th graders doing it. So we just need to stay focused.”
“If we can put together a full game, we will be hard to beat.”
