A slow start dashed Selma High’s hopes of reaching the Class 6A Girls State Basketball Tournament.
Fantasia Wilson and Aniyah Cabbil each scored 20 points as Northridge pounded the Lady Saints 66-49 in the 6A Girls Southwest Regional Final on Wednesday at Alabama State University. Wilson earned MVP honors.
The Lady Saints finished the season at 21-6 in the final game for All-Star Rodericka Parker, who scored a team-high 21 points.
Northridge (23-12) jumped out to a 15-5 lead, led 36-17 at halftime and 47-17 in the third quarter, earning its first-ever state tournament berth.
“We started out slow and dug ourselves in a deep hole, you can’t do that in a championship game,” Lady Saints coach Wil Morgan said. “But I’m proud of my girls, they exceeded everyone’s expecations of them. We’ll be back.”
Lydia Paulette finished with 10 points for the Lady Jaguars. Aileen Charles was praised for defending Parker. “Aileen did a good job slowing Parker down,” Lady Jaguars coach Jake Carnley said. “Parker can score inside and outside.”
Aeraeonna Manuel had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Lady Saints, Saryah Pope added 11. Parker and Manuel made the All-tournament team.
