The Five Points Community Center held its monthly food giveaway on Wednesday in Orrville.

Several residents from various parts of Dallas County were given boxes of food that included bread, frozen chicken, container of strawberries, cupcakes, cookies, bag of potatoes and other assorted meats.

A truck full of food was delivered to the Five Points Community Center Wednesday morning. Volunteers from Central Michigan University assisted Five Points Community Center CEO Herbie Blackmon until the food was gone.

Blackmon, a longtime Selma resident, purchased the food, which weighed over 14,000 pounds and its part of a monthly giveaway. He’s a retired basketball coach and teacher as well as a member of Order of Eastern Star 367 and Mason.

“When I came back from Vietnam in 1971, I wanted to help Dallas County,” Blackmon said. “I feel good about giving back.”

Terry McGlasson, a member of The Extra Mile organization in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, said it’s been an honor helping out in Selma.

“It’s a privilege to help Selma,” McGlasson said. “Most of our kids have never been to the South.”

Rhuben Ellis, a retired Dallas County Commission Mail Clerk and one of the CEOS at Five Points Community Center, said he enjoys giving back.

“Dallas County has been good to me and I wanted to give back to Dallas County,” Ellis said. “Helping out makes me feel good.”
