The postponement of baseball and softball season due to the coronavirus highlighted the Valley Grande City Council meeting on Monday night.

All practices and games will be postponed until the students return to school, currently scheduled for April 6.

Valley Grande Mayor Matt Dobbs said there was no choice but to delay the season because of COVID-19.

Valley Grande Parks and Recreation Director Bubba Holley told the council his plans for the games to resume at Valley Grande City Park.

“When schools re-open, I’ll give teams another week to practice, then we’ll start playing games,” Holley said.

At the last council meeting, Holley also said games will be played on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

In other council news:

– Valley Grande Public Safety Director Boyd Pugh spoke with Engineer Ray Hogg of Hogg-Stone Associates regarding the approval to move forward with the chlorine chamber at the lagoon. Pugh said that Hogg Chad Scott sent in a bid and awaiting a bid from EMC before anything can be done.

-The council agreed to pay $9,000 to ARC Pyrotechnics Inc., a company based out of Guthrie, Oklahoma for the Fourth of July Fireworks. The price increased from $8,000 last year. No vote was taken because the Fourth of July plans are in the city budget.

– Dobbs said it’s too early to make a call on the Valley Grande Easter Egg hunt, scheduled for April 4.

The entire city council was present: Dobbs, council members Ronnie Sawyer, Jimmy Johnson, Lamar Morgan, Tim White, Tammy Troha and City Clerk/Treasurer Janet Frasier.

The next Valley Grande City Council meeting is scheduled for April 6 at 6 p.m. at Valley Grande City Hall.
