It took Marion Military Institute four innings to figure out Robert Morris, but the Lady Tigers did figure them out.

MMI came back from a 5-0 deficit in the top of the fourth and scored seven unanswered runs in the last three innings to defeat the defending United States College Athletic Association national champions.

“We have been getting some late and ugly wins,” MMI head coach Joe Guthrie said. “We are a young team because each year we have nine or 10 different girls that are on the team. Our execution early hasn’t been the best, but we have won.”

The Lady Eagles struck first off Megan Green’s first of two homeruns on the day in the second inning.

In the visitor’s half of the fourth inning, with one out, Maryellen Rutowsla doubled to get the Lady Tigers moving. Alex Sullivan followed her with a walk and the two were driven in on Alexis Billington’s double.

The two sides traded scoreless innings until the top of the sixth, when MMI would put the final stamp on the game.

Rutowsla and Alex Sullivan garnered back-to-back walks to begin the inning followed by a single by Britni Trawick to load the bases.

Billington again came up big with a single driving in Rutowsla and Sullivan.

After an out, Sam Martinez drove in Sullivan on a single.

Billington and Martinez then both scored on passed balls to complete the comeback.

“We have been getting good production from our two through six batters,” Guthrie said. “The lineup has changed with them a bit, but it is always the same players and they are in the top 15 in each of the offensive categories in our region. I don’t see that changing.”

Gabby McDaniel picked up the win for the Lady Tigers giving up five earned runs and striking out eight batters.
