For the first time in a long time at Dallas County High School a night game was a possibility Monday.

Though the rainy weather put a damper on the actual game, the storms held off long enough for local representatives, coaches and Dallas County fans to turn out for the dedication ceremony.

A presentation of $10,000 by the Ala-Tom RC&D Council to help with the expenses made the lights shine a little brighter.

Dallas County Commissioner Roy Moore said the idea for the lights was the work of Julie Simmons, a longtime Hornet fan and parent.

“This can be credited to Julie,” he said. “She came to me with this idea two years ago and pushed it through. It took us a little time, but we finally got it done.”

Simmons said an afternoon drive sparked her enthusiasm to make the lights a reality. She said she was driving near Craig Elementary School and noticed there were lights on the ballfield.

“I figured if they could do it, we could do it,” she said. “I didn’t see why we couldn’t have lights here.”

Moore said the school received a little help along the way. Pioneeer Electric donated the poles for the lights to be mounted.

“Without the donations from people like Pioneer Electric we couldn’t have done this,” he said. “We can’t thank them enough.”

The new lights, Simmons said, will  help immediately and aid generations down the road.

“This isn’t just for the players who are on the field now,” she said. “This is for all of the individuals who will use their field in the future to play here.”
