No matter what type of exercise program a person plans to take on, it is important to take the proper precautions to prevent injuries.

As the weather warms up and the skies become clearer, many people are choosing to go outdoors to exercise. Whether you run, cycle, walk or hike, whether you’re experienced or a novice, be cautious to keep yourself from injury.

According to an online heath magazine, more than 60 percent of people who begin working out for the first time or pick it up again after an extended time, injure themselves within the first month.

Dr. Bruce Taylor, M. D., of Taylor Internal Medicine, said for those who haven’t exercised in a while and wish to pick it back up, to keep it simple.

“Stretch, warm-up and start slow,” Taylor said. “Before starting any exercise, check with your doctor and do a stress test. When you’re inactive you have to slowly build a routine. Work out at least 30 minutes a day to stay fit.”

Experts say there is a right and wrong way to exercise. When you go to the gym or choose to lift weights, here are some tips to consider.

The no. 1 thing is safety. So many injuries occur when a person does not know how to exercise the correct way. Correct form during exercise is key and if you feel like you’re not doing something right, ask a qualified professional to help you.

Don’t jerk when lifting. Speed is fine but a fluid motion and proper form is key when performing any exercise.

Don’t use all of your body parts when exercising.  Have you ever seen people doing biceps curls and arching their backs? Big no-no.

Never lock your joints when working out. Keep your knees and elbows slightly bent so weight won’t transfer to your joints.

Don’t arch your back when lifting heavy weights. Why? Because you run the risk of having a serious back injury lasting for days, weeks or longer.

Learn how to do the proper squat, push-up, leg press or chest press from someone who is a professional.

When you exercise be sure to bring bottled water with you to sip on every few minutes to prevent dehydration.

Wear comfortable shoes when you exercise.

Don’t exercise in secluded areas. Don’t exercise in isolated or darkened areas. Things happen and its better to be safe than sorry.
