The Contactless Selma/Dallas County Back 2 School Rally was held last weekend.

An assortment of school supplies, including pencils, pens, composition tablets, rulers, glue and backpacks were given out at 2401 North Church Street. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served to the guests.

Selma AIR and the Black Belt Wellness Center co-hosted the event and was assisted by several local organizations.

Orrville Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin, Snow’s Cleaning Service, Bows and Blessings Luxury Creations, Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn, L.I.F.T. Ministries, Worship Unplugged and DJ Barack all sponsored the back to school event.

The Dallas County Sheriff Office, Alabama Coalition against Domestic Violence (ACADV), Sabra Sanctuary, COSA, Five Horizons, UAB Office and Dallas County Extension office also held booths and made solid contributions.

LaTangila Williams of LIFT Ministries said she appreciated the community turnout.

“We wanted to build morale for the kids because the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on things,” Williams said. “It means a lot to have the community support.”

Larry Cowan of Selma AIR and BlackBelt Wellness Center said it’s important to get the kids’ school year off to a good start.

“We’re trying to give the kids everything they need for school and let them that the community is thinking about them,” Cowan said.

Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum, Selma City Councilwoman Angela Benjamin and Dallas County Commissioner Curtis Williams were among high-profile officials who attended the event. Commissioner Williams is Williams’ father.

 

Selma City Schools will start online classes on Aug. 24. The Dallas County School System will start classes on Sept. 8.
