Dallas County played far from its best softball, but the Lady Hornets were still able to leave the park with a 3-1 win over Selma Tuesday.

“We’re not hitting the ball,” Lady Hornets coach Ed Miller said. “This is the second game in a row for this. They go out in practice and hit line drives all across the field, then they come out here in a game and get out on their front foot or the arm-bar and drive everything right into the ground.”

Dallas County (18-2) scored one earned run and could only muster up five hits, in a lineup of younger players, which has seen a lot of playing time this year.

“We have been trying to go with a lot of players,” Miller said. “We’re are done with that now. Starting tomorrow we are going to have our girls and let them play every game.”

The Lady Hornets started the scoring in the second inning with a walk and three straight hit-by-pitches bringing around two in the inning before the close.

The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning When Jasmine Gould started things with a hit and moved to third on an error during Whitney Denson’s at bats. Gould scored when Casey Baggett singled.

Selma tried to rally in the top half of the sixth inning. Karlyn Savage led off singling to left field and scored on the next at-bat when Myralla Rose doubled to drive her in.

The Lady Saints would get runners on second and third with only one out before Cassie Daniels came in to pitch in relief for Dallas County and struck out the last five batters she faced for the save.

“I think we hit the ball pretty well today,” Lady Saints coach Morgan Boyd said. “We just need to do a better job of throwing strikes and not getting down early. I think now that the distractions like spring break are over we can really focus and move on.”

Denson got the win for the Lady Hornets, giving up one earned run and striking out nine.
