Arts and crafts can be a learning experience

Easter is a month away, and for those with children who like to decorate, arts and crafts around the home may just be the answer to keeping little ones busy early.

Rosalie Bjelke, co-manager for Four Seasons Garden Center, said planting flower seeds into Styrofoam cups, is one way for children to celebrate Easter.

“Children can plant Radishes, Marigolds and Zinnias because they come up quickly,” Bjelke said. “They can even decorate their cup or draw something on it to make it their own.”

Simple projects and crafts around the house can help pre-kindergarten to kindergarten children learn shapes, colors and form. These activities can be fun for children of all ages.

Create paper eggs. Have white cardstock, pastel-colored tissue paper, glue and scissors on hand. Use the cardstock to cut out small, medium and large egg shapes. Tear or cut the tissue paper into small pieces.

Glue the tissue paper onto the construction paper. Finally, let children choose the design and shapes.

Dyed Easter Eggs. Use hardboiled eggs, water and an egg dye kit or food coloring for this craft. Mix egg dye according to package instructions. Children can dip eggs in the color or colors of their choice. For multicolored eggs, use a wax marker to trace on an egg between dipping into different dyes. Children can also create faces, shapes and designs on the eggs.

Handprint lamb. Use a silver marker, black construction paper, scissors, cotton balls and glue for this project. Trace the child’s hand on construction paper and cut it out. Use glue to secure the cotton balls on the palm of the hand.

Turn the hand upside down. Use a silver pen to draw eyes and a mouth on the thumb. Viola! You have a black and white lamb.

Easter Lillies. Get scissors, popsicle sticks, glue and white and green construction paper. Trace your child’s hand on white construction paper and cut it out. Next, cut a long piece of green construction paper for the stem and make sure it’s wide enough to wrap around the Popsicle stick. Wrap the green paper around the popsicle stick and glue. Fold the hand into a cone shape and glue it to the top of the green stem. Cut out two or three leaves and glue them onto the stem.
