The Selma Times-Journal’s two football Most Valuable Player awards went to Selma High and Southside High.

Selma wide receiver Javonte Stubbs was named The Times-Journal offensive MVP; Southside linebacker Chris Bonner landed The Times-Journal defensive MVP award.

Stubbs was one of the main reasons why the Saints reached round two of the Class 5A state playoffs, accounting for 2,515 all-purpose yards and 25 touchdowns. He had 60 receptions for 1,233 yards and 11 touchdowns, rushing 60 times for 580 yards, nine touchdowns, 702 yards and three touchdowns on kickoff and returns.  At cornerback, he had five interceptions.

“I deserved it because of the hard work I put in,” Stubbs said.  “It was tough overcoming the coronavrius.”

Selma coach Willie Gandy said Stubbs had the unique skillset for making big plays.

“What made Jevonte a great player: he went hard at every practice like it was his last,” Gandy said. “He laid it on the line every play like he would never play again. Kid has something in him very few players have: special talent.”

Bonner ignited a physical, quick Southside defense, leading the Panthers to a 3A state playoff berth. Fifty one of his 92 total tackles were solo. Bonner had 30 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback sacks, forced eight fumbles and recovered three of them. “I thank God for all of the awards I’ve been given,” Bonner said. “God has been showing up for me.”

Southside coach Charles Moody said Bonner’s attention to detail and taking instructions made him a solid player.  “Chris was very coachable, and he understood why certain things were done certain ways,” Moody said. “He was a very hard worker and wanted greatness. He will truly be missed. I hate I only had the opportunity to coach him for two years.”
