Historic Brown Chapel AME Church honored R.B. Hudson Middle School and Clark Elementary School on Thursday.

Brown Chapel Pastor Leodis Strong presented both schools with over 50 gift bags each that contained either gift cards from Lannie’s Restaurant or Coffee Shoppe, face masks and hand sanitizer.

Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams and R.B. Hudson Middle School Principal Cicely Curtis were among those who attended the event.

“The AME Church always had strong emphasis on education,” Strong said. “At the end of the Civil War, Brown Chapel opened a school because no other school was available for African-Americans.”

Williams and Curtis both said they appreciated the gifts provided from Brown Chapel and local businesses.

“This last year has been hard, it’s great to know that we have support from local businesses,” Williams said.
