Dallas County Commissioner Jan Justice was recently elected to serve as a member of the 2021-2022 Legislative Committee of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama.
The ACCA is a statewide association that represents Alabama’s 67 county governments.
The Association’s Legislative Committee is composed of a chairman and a representative from each county.
Justice will represent the interests of Dallas County on the committee and work in concert with six steering committees to formulate the Association’s legislative agenda for the 2022 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature.
“I look forward to working with our Legislative delegation and other commissioners around the State to pass legislation that supports County government,” Justice said. “We want to bring attention to any bills that support our counties around the State and specifically Dallas County. We will also be monitoring legislation that might be detrimental to our County government, such as unfunded mandates that will ultimately cost Dallas County money.
“During the 2021 session there were nine bills supported by the Association of County Commissions of Alabama that were passed. As I get more involved in the 2022 priorities I will be letting everyone know what bills we are supporting.”
The ACCA promotes improved county government services in Alabama, offers educational programs for county officials and their staff members, administers insurance programs for county governments and employees, offers legal advice, and represents the interests of county government before state and federal organizations and agencies. “Counties are a creation of the State, which means they can only do what the State authorizes them to do,” ACCA Executive Director Sonny Brasfield said, “For this reason, counties must maintain an incredibly close working relationship with the Legislature, which is why serving on this committee is a tremendous honor and responsibility.”
