Run benefits athletes and racers

United States Olympic runner Steve Roland Prefontaine once said, “A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they’re capable of understanding.”

Saturday morning, a race will be a work of art that will not only affect the people running and watching, but will affect the athletes of Selma High who jump, throw, catch and hit as well.

The annual Butterflies and Bridges race Saturday morning has spent the past four years helping out the student-athletes for Selma, all with the help of a race that only takes about 30 minutes.

With school budgets being cut, athletics are struggling to have the budgets once allocated, but when you go to Memorial Stadium on a Friday night, or Selma’s gym on a Saturday, you see how much they are appreciated.

This year, you can help your own school by registering as well, and the money goes for twice the cause.

Officials said registration is going well, but there is always more that are welcome.

However, the race isn’t just good for the school, it’s great for the individual.

The race is expecting good weather, with highs just reaching 71 degrees, so there won’t be much stress as far as heat.

If you, like me, feel too out of shape to take part of the 8-kilometer run, there is a 2-mile run-walk.

If you want, bring the children along for the walk.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come and you can even start a family walking time for exercise nightly.

Begin your walking on Saturday and continue it at local parks like Bloch or Paul Grist.

So I hope to see you at the Selma Central Office Saturday morning.

Don’t forget to bring your running shoes.
