Selma City Council President Billy Young held a Christmas Toy Jubilee on Tuesday at First Baptist Church.

Assortment of toys for boys and girls of different ages and plates that contained ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and potato salad.

Members of Young’s fraternity, the Dallas County chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Inc., the Delta Pi Lambda Chapter also assisted with the giveaway.

The event was sponsored by Young and his community partners called the Presidential Partners.

Young said it meant a lot to him donating during Christmas.

“Christmas is very special time for the people of Selma,” Young said. “The celebration of the birth of Jesus is joy personified. As Council President, I believe it is our responsibility to celebrate our young people and encourage everyone to give. This year’s Joy Jubilee was the first and I am so grateful that we were able to provide hot meals and toys for many of our citizens.”

Volunteers included members of the First Baptist Church, 100 Black Men Selma, Inc., members of the Divine 9 Fraternities and Sororities, Councilman Jannie Thomas and Representative Prince Chestnut.

“I am especially thankful for the large number of friends and family that supported this effort through service and donations,” Young said. “This was huge undertaking that was supported by a great number of wonderful Selmains. I am thankful for the unity in our community and I look forward in making sure we celebrate joy in our beloved Selma.”

Attorney Donovan McGuire, a member of the Black Belt Alphas, said he enjoys giving back to the community.
