Area runners place in Monday meet

The host Morgan Academy Senator track squad had a strong showing against the more than 20 teams in attendance at Monday’s second meet in as many weeks at Mrmorial Stadium.

Several runners logged first and second place finishes in the day’s events, some placing in more than one, head coach Rob Robinson said.

On the men’s side, Hunter Rodgers took first place in the shotput.

Austin Smitherman placed second in the long-jump and the 4-by-100.

For the girls, Catherine Armstrong took first place in the long-jump and Rachel Gomes took second. Gomes also took first place in the 100 meter hurdles.

Sarah Frasier took second place in the triple jump as well.

Both the mens and womens teams finished first in the speed relay races as well.

In the overall team stanndings for the men, Tuscaloosa Academy finished in first place with 104 points followed by Kingwood Christian School with 65. Lee Scott Academy took third place with 64 points followed by Evangel Christian with 56 and Morgan Academy with 47.5.

For the girls, the Lady Senators narrowly missed a first place finish with 123 points, falling just short of Lee Scott Academy’s 128.

Prattville Christian finished in third place with 69 points.

The meet served as a warmup for the teams to next week’s state championship meet, which will also be held at Selma’s Memorial Stadium.

The meet will begin Thursday and run throughout the afternoon.
