SABRA Sanctuary will host a charity golf tournament, sponsored by Pepsi-Cola of Selma, March 30 at 10 a.m. at Valley Grande Golf Course.
The inaugural tournament benefitting SABRA Sanctuary marks the first community-wide fundraiser for the organization in 24 months due to the pandemic, according to the Sanctuary’s Executive Director Merrill South.
“It’s going to be a tremendous help to us,” she said. “Obviously, our fundraising funds have dwindled, and this wonderful blessing that Pepsi is helping us with will reimburse those funds and allow us to care for domestic violence victims and their children in all six of the counties that we serve.”
South said she hopes to make the tournament an annual event.
The 3-man scramble tournament format features two mulligans, one thrown ball and one hit from cup per person. The entry fee to compete is $80 per player, and $20 per team to hit from the red tees at the 18th hole.
Community members and organizations interested in supporting the tournament had the opportunity to sponsor a hole for $100, provide monetary donations or donate goods and service to be used as door prizes.
South said 20 teams have registered to play in the tournament and over 70 community sponsors have stepped up to the plate for the event.
“Selma has really reached out and helped to fund this project,” she said. “We could not be more thrilled.”
Though she said the tournament was at maximum capacity for teams, she left open the possibly of adding a few more teams to the mix.
“You hate to turn somebody away, but as of today, we have 20 teams,” South said.
South said there is a backup plan available if the weather doesn’t cooperate the day of the tournament.
“We have a rain date of April 6, but we’re going to cross our fingers, toes and everything else, and hope it’s as beautiful a day as it is today,” she said.
