Morgan Academy’s baseball team fell to Tuscaloosa Academy 6-5 on Monday night at Tuscaloosa.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Knights sophomore Mills Powell hit a walkoff single to drive in two runs.
Andrew Thomas started the contest on the mound for Morgan Academy. He struck out six batters and allowed four hits in three innings.
In relief, Davis Vardaman pitched two innings and allowed one run. Hayden Roberts pitched the remainder of the contest but gave up five runs.
“Roberts struggled to find the strike zone tonight,” Senators head coach Stephen Clements said. “(He) fought hard, but didn’t have his best stuff.”
Clements said Monday’s outing snapped a 10-game winning streak for Morgan Academy.
Vardaman and T.B. Clements each had two of Morgan Academy’s seven hits in the contest.
The Senators cobbled together a solid outing Friday night against Ezekiel Academy in a doubleheader.
In the opener, Morgan shut out Ezekiel 6-0. Thomas struck out 12 batters and allowed one hit in six innings, while Matthew Hand closed the contest in relief with one strikeout and one hit allowed.
John Allen Ingram led the Senators in the batter’s box, going 2-for-3. He also stole four bases.
Morgan defeated Ezekiel 10-8 in the second game. Trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Clements hit a double with the bases loaded to bring home Ingram, C.J. Crocker and Milton Hand.
“(I’m) really proud of the way our guys responded in the bottom of the sixth in Game 2, down three runs and all the momentum on their side,” Coach Clements said. “To respond that way shows a lot of leadership.”
Clements, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored the game-winning run by stealing third and home, while Thomas added another run with a homer over the left field wall.
Barron Frazier, Thomas, Crocker and Ingram each contributed two of the Senators’ 11 hits.
