New marina means new business

For almost two years a City Marina for Selma has been out of sight and out of mind for many people.
Since the old marina was destroyed by fire in September of 2009, many people have probably forgotten it was ever there.
But now, the Selma City Council, Park and Recreation Department and others are working to bring a fully-functional building and restaurant back to the area.
For those who don’t think a Marina is important, take a drive west on Highway 80 on a Saturday or Sunday and spend a little time at the Demopolis Marina.
Boats of all kinds stop by all day to gas up, fill up on food and just take a break from a day on the river.
Through the years, the city has made a solid investment in keeping the marina up to par and it has paid serious dividends.
The restaurant is also a popular draw for people who never set foot on a boat.
Most any time of day when the weather cooperates people flock to the restaurant to enjoy a steak, seafood or a Po-boy as they watch the boats drift by.
Numerous employees make the marina restaurant a part of their lunch rotations as well. It’s a very relaxing way to break up the day.
In Alabama, restaurants, rivers and fishing tournaments provide a big boost for cities that are fortunate enough to have a large waterway within access. Selma’s layout as a river city makes it necessary to have a marina that can meet the needs of organizers.
We already have our fair share of fishing tournaments, and they are usually successful. But it would be great to have a nice, comfortable landing area for weigh-ins, prize giveaways and post-tournament recreation.
One of the best things about a good marina is that it is something people of all ages can enjoy.
Children enjoy feeding turtles or fish that swim nearby and older residents enjoy watching the calming water and wildlife.
The plans are in place and the wheels are turning. The council seems ready to make the marina happen. Let’s hope things fall into place sooner than later.
