The Evans Special Benefit Fund made its annual donation to three agencies that help special needs children in Selma and Dallas County on Wednesday.

Selma City Schools, Dallas County School, and the Cahaba Center for Mental Health all received $4,000 checks by former Selma Mayor George Evans, the ESBF Organizer and currently Chairman of the Board. “It means everything giving back to the special needs kids,” Evans said.

Evans, who served two terms as Selma Mayor from 2008 to 2016, said the program helps benefits the kids. “When state and federal government give out money to agencies, they are under guidelines on how to spend the money,” Evans said. “The agencies can spend the money how they want and what’s best for the kids”

For the last 12 years, the ESBF — has donated money to special needs organizations. The donated funds are raised through its annual golf tournament — held in October at the Valley Grande Golf Course.

The SCS and Dallas County School all use the funds for educational supplies and equipment.

Evans said special needs have always been important to him, daring back to his 40-year career in education, including four as chief academic officer of the Alabama Department of Education and seven as superintendent of Dallas County Schools. “We do this for the benefit of the children as well as the educators who have to administer to those children, in order to make sure those children who are special are not left out,” Evans said.
