The old Brown YMCA Building and the Selma Redevelopment Authority will be among the subjects discussed at the Selma City Council meeting on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at City Chambers.

During the Citizen’s request at Thursday’s city council work session, Athelstein Johnson discussed the Brown’s restoration. Johnson is in a group that wants the city council to consider restoring the building, not tearing it down.

Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. said the group deserves to get a chance at restoring the building.

City Council President Billy Young said the council will look into the situation before they vote.

Chad McEachern of the Edmunitie Missions addressed the city council at the work session.

McEachern said that began having conversations with other leaders in the community regarding the possibility of taking the dilapidated Brown Y building, demolishing and securing it using the funds to reinvest in the Community by creating outdoor space for the Dr. Michael and Catherine Bullock Community and Recreation Center and provided draft mock-ups.

Civil Rights Historic Louretta Wimberly is scheduled to discuss the Brown YMCA restoration during the citizen’s request on Tuesday.

Regarding the SRA, Perkins had City Attorney Major Madison revise a contract. Perkins said he would sign the deal if voted on.

Young said it is a conflict of interest for him because he once served on the board.

Former Selma city councilwoman Angela Benjamin and Realty developmnent Sam Harris III are also scheduled to speak during the citizen’s request along with the Mayor’s Report and Attorney’s Report.
