Adrionna Powell is leaving the city of Selma on a good note.

The Selma High School graduate recently received the Alexis Hunter Scholarship.

Powell was presented the $500 scholarship by JoAnn Hunter-Walker and Selma City Councilwoman Jannie Thomas.

The scholarship is named after Alexis Hunter, who was killed on Dec. 21, 2013. Former Selma City Council President Corey Bowie, Thomas and Hunter-Walker, Hunter’s mother, established the scholarship.

Powell successfully met the scholarship requirements which included: residing in Ward 7,  have a 2.5 GPA, provide college acceptance letter, write an essay on gun violence and submitting a school transcript.

“I feel very honored and excited to receive the scholarship,” Powell said. “It is very rewarding because I didn’t think I would get the scholarship.”

Thomas said that Powell stood out among the scholarship candidates.

Powell, who finished with  a3.7 GPA and 20 ACT score, said her essay discussed gun violence in the Queen City.

The next step for Powell is attending Troy University in the fall with a focus on Athletic Training.  Before attending Troy, Powell is taking classes at Wallace Community College-Selma.

Powell said that she will be getting hands-on training at Troy, working with various athletic teams.

“I am very excited to attend Troy, I will be working with on all of their athletic programs,” Powell said.
