The State Senator Seat in District 23 may remain with the Sanders family.

At Tuesday’s runoff election, Hank Sanders faces Robert Stewart for the District 23 State Senator Seat.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and closes at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Sanders’ daughter, Malika Sanders-Fortier, faces  Birmingham educator Yolanda Flowers in the Democratic Governor’s race. Sanders-Fortier, an attorney, declined for re-election as State Senator to run for Governor.

The winner will meet incumbent Gov. Kay Ivey in the general election in November.

During the Democratic Forum last month, Sanders-Fortier said she will focus on education — healthcare — and economics Sanders-Fortier also said that her family background and experience, makes her a qualified candidate to run for Governor.

Hank Sanders won six of the eight counties: Butler, Clarke, Conecuh, Lowndes, Monroe and Wilcox. He received a total of 10,662 votes or 44.7 percent.

Stewart won Dallas County by 51.5 percent, the only area he won. He received 7,160 votes or 30.1 percent.

Former Selma Mayor Darrio Melton, who won Perry County, endorsed Sanders.

Several Dallas County residents voiced their opinion on Social Media supporting Stewart., including Terry Chestnut and Rex Jones that were part of the percentage that voted for the Selma native.G
