A Selma community is in mourning after a 2-year-old toddler suffered critical injuries Sunday evening and died early Monday after being involved in a tragic accident on Matthew Lane.
Glenn Hunter Jr., died from his injuries at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham early Monday morning according to reports from Alabama State Troopers.
Reports and witnesses said Hunter sustained his fatal injuries after being trapped under a truck that was involved in a two-vehicle accident around 7 p.m. Sunday. During the accident, the toddler reportedly came out of the truck and found himself trapped under the tipped over truck.
The other vehicle involved was a 1998 Plymouth, which reportedly grazed the 1999 Chevrolet pick-up leading the accident. The accident and surrounding events are still under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.
Immediately after the accident a number of men from the area worked to remove Hunter from underneath the truck. Once removed, witnesses said they saw blood coming from the child’s nose, mouth and head. They also said the boy’s body was limp.
“It was awful,” said an onlooker who asked to remain anonymous. “After everything happened, the child’s mom was yelling ‘my baby, my baby, where’s my baby.”
Alabama State Troopers confirmed Monday that emergency officials transported Hunter by helicopter to Children’s Hospital. Hunter, who would have turned 3-years-old next month, was pronounced dead at 7:55 a.m. Monday.
Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but Millers Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
