Former Morgan Academy shortstop Gunnar Henderson was called up to the Baltimore Orioles’ main roster on Wednesday.
Henderson was playing for Triple-A Norfolk until getting a call from Baltimore, three games behind the AL Wild Card playoff berth.
“It’s been a pretty fun year so far,” Henderson told The Selma Times-Journal last month. “Just being able to have those experiences and being able to play in those types of situations, I felt like it has been a very good experience for my development.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully carrying it in the big leagues, but you’ve just got to take each and every day, just try to get better and better, and just be the best player I can.”
The Orioles optioned infielder Tyler Nevin to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Henderson. To open a spot on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated right-hander Denyi Reyes for assignment.
The 21-year-old Henderson will wear jersey No. 2 for Baltimore.
Henderson is a 2019 graduate of Morgan Academy and was The Selma Times-Journal baseball player of the year that same school year.
